8/23/1942Gorabai Katiya, freedom fighter, was shot by police while participating in a procession for freedom movement in Narsihapur.
8/15/1947The Indian independence divided not only the country but its armed forces as well. These units came down and their equipment was transferred to the newly created Royal Pakistan Air Force. Thus, the principal components of the Royal Indian Air Force, during the partition, were nos. 3, 4, 7, 8 and 10 Squadrons with Tempest US, No. 2 Squadron with Spitfires and No. 12 Squadron with C-47s and No. 1 Air Observation Flight (AOF). The establishment of this AOF with AOP Auster 4s, 5s and 6s, coincided with independence. No. 6 Squadron, which had been in process of converting from Spitfires to C-47s at Drigh Road, had been stood down and its transports transferred to Pakistan.

4/22/1992IAF in response to a recommendation by Secretary General, the Security Council adopted resolution No. 751 (1992) by which it established UNOSOM for handling situation which had deteriorated to an extent where death and destruction forced hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee their homes and causing need for emergency humanitarian assistance.

8/1/1846Dwarkanath Tagore, a Hindu philanthropist, died in London.
1/27/1931Mahatma Gandhi was released from jail, ending eight months of imprisonment for his campaign of civil disobedience against British rule. To avoid demonstrations, Gandhi was released late in the evening from the Yerovda jail and put on a night train to Bombay. There was hope in British circles that the release of Gandhi would end the strife and lead to discussions of dominion status. Gandhi made clear, however, that he would persist in his civil disobedience campaign.
