7/23/1933	Jatindra Mohan Sengupta, great leader, lawyer, social worker, freedom fighter, nationalist and president of Bengal Swaraj Party, died at Ranchi. He was addresed by the people of Bengal as 'Deshapriya' (Beloved of the Country).
8/16/1946	Hindus and Muslims riot in Calcutta. 90 people lost their lives and other 900 were hurt. The Muslim League observed a ""Direct Action Day"" and announced its withdrawal of support from all plans.
8/10/2000	Parliament approves the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Bill to create a hilly state of Uttaranchal.
1/3/1946	Three High Ranked Officers of Azad Hind Fauj were released by Gen. C. Auchinleck.
1/4/1932	Mahatma Gandhi and other members of his All-India National Congress are back in jail again. After the collapse of the London conference, British authorities cracked down even harder on Gandhi and his followers, and the Mahatma urged Indians to increase their acts of civil disobedience. ""Wake up from sleep,"" Gandhi said as he ordered a boycott of British goods. ""Discard foreign cloth. Discard narcotics. Discard violence. Defy all orders calculated to crush the national spirit."" The government declared Gandhi's Congress an illegal organization. Under new laws, even peaceful picketing is illegal. The Congress party responded to the crackdown by recruiting more followers and striking more plants.

10/17/1995	BJP withdraws support to Mayavati Government in Uttar Pradesh. UP Governor Motilal Vohra accepts the resignation of Mayawati and her cabinet but asks her to continue as caretaker government. BJP's top brass takes the final decision to break with the BSP.
1/1/1988	The Officers Training School (OTS) was re-christened as Officers Training Academy. Besides training Indian nationals, 74 cadets from Sri Lanka have also been trained at the OTA.
12/8/1999	The Opposition attacks Prime Minister Vajpayee for ""withholding'' information on ministers' resignation.
