2/2/1958	Family tradition still counts for something in Indian politics. Indira Gandhi, the only daughter of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the granddaughter of a statesman, has been elected president of the Congress party in India. Mrs. Gandhi will be installed into her new office next Sunday, and her job is not expected to be an easy one. The Congress party has been wracked by internal dissension and has been on the verge of collapse. It is hoped that Mrs. Gandhi, who is 41, will breath some new life into the party. Most of the politicians who have been arguing about the future of their party and country are fairly old. Mrs. Gandhi, who is known for her leftist sentiments, is expected to act quickly to put her own mark on party policies.

12/3/1971	Hostilities broke out between India and Pakistan. On the very night that hostilities commenced, with Pakistan bombing several air fields, IN Ships 'Rajput' and 'Akshay' were leaving Vishakapatnam harbour when they obtained a sonar contact. They fired several depth charges and proceeded on their mission when there was no further evidence of a submarine's presence. Thereafter, a loud explosion of rattling windows panes off the Vishakapatnam beach was heard . The Pakistani submarine 'Ghazi' (a Tench class submarine obtained from the USA in 1964) had come to grief.
4/23/1930	Riots break out in Peshawar; 20 Indians shot down after killing of three Britishers.
4/1/1933	Indian Air Force was established at Drigh Road in Karachi (now in Pakistan). Subroto Mukherjee and four other officers were inducted as pilots when the first Indian Air Force Squadron was formed. The first aircraft flight joined the Indian Air Force, at that time it possessed a strength of six RAF-trained officers and 19 Havai Sepoys (literally, air soldiers); its aircraft inventory comprised four Westland Wapiti II. A army co-operation biplaned at Drigh Road as the ""A"" Flight nucleus of the planned No.1 (Army Co-operation) Squadron.
11/27/1998	India retains the Asia Cup tennis championship in Delhi beating Uzbekistan 2-1 in the final.
1/9/1998	Three RJD ministers in the Gujral Cabinet - Mr. Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Capt. Jai Narayan Nishad and Mrs. Kanti Singh - resign.
