Inspired by the Sankaracharyas - Sankara Eye Care was established in Coimbatore in the year 1976. Dr R V Ramani (Founder and Managing Trustee) and his wife Dr Radha Ramani have dedicated the last 30+ years of their life on the mission of eradicating curable blindness performing high quality surgeries and eye care for the rural poor absolutely free.

Sankara's Mission is Vision 20/20 by the Year 2020: Eradicating curable blindness all over India by establishing 20 Sankara Community Eye Care Hospitals all over India. From 2020 onwards Sankara Eye Care would be providing high quality eye care to over a million rural poor every year absolutely free, making it the largest community eye care provider in the world.

Sankara Eye Care Quick Facts

-In March 2013, Sankara Eye Care performed its one millionth totally free eye surgery
-In 2012-2013 Sankara Eye Care performed 150,558 free surgeries.
-Operates 8 Sankara Community Eye Care hospitals all over India
-Among the largest and fastest growing free eye care providers in the world

Each Sankara Community Eye Hospital is a 200 bed hospital built on 3 - 4 acres of land. Each hospital performs 25,000 free surgeries annually for the rural poor through a unique outreach model - where we go to the villages and bring the needy poor back to the hospital, and perform the medical treatment and then return them back to the village at the end of 3 days. The entire transportation, treatment, food, boarding is completely FREE.

A unique feature of Sankara Eye Care is a 20 paid/ 80 free cross subsidy model, that ensures that every new hospital is financially self-sufficient in 5 years. Surplus generated from performing 20 surgeries on urban walk-in paying patients, helps us perform 80 free surgeries for poor patients brought in from the villages through the outreach model.

Currently 8 hospitals are operational at Coimbatore, Guntur, Krishnankovil (Tamil Nadu), Bangalore, Shimoga, Anand (Gujarat), Ludhiana and Hrishikesh. The hospitals at Hrishikesh and Krishnankovil have been handed to us by other trusts. The 9th Sankara Community Hospital is nearing completion at Kanpur - and will be inaugurated in October 2014. Land has been procured in Jodhpur(Rajasthan), Indore (Madhya Pradesh) and Naya Raipur(Chattisgarh) - and fundraising for these hospitals has commenced. We expect that the 10th, 11th and 12th Sankara hospitals will be operational in 2017.

For many of our hospitals major funding partners have been institutions like - have been Mission For Vision Trust, Jaslok, Infosys Foundation, Bosch Foundation, Sight savers, Orbis and the like.
