Indian National Satellite (INSAT-1B) launched. This was also a multi-purpose communication and meteorology satellite, which served for more than its design life of seven years. It was launched by a US Space Shuttle.

7/13/1988	Second developmental launch of ASLV. Stretched Rohini Satellite Series (SROSS-2). This carried remote sensing payload of German space agency in addition to Gamma Ray astronomy payload. Could not be placed in orbit.

4/3/1999	Indian National Satellite (INSAT-2E), fifth satellite in INSAT-2 series, launched. This has multipurpose communication & meteorological capabilities. This is still in use. Launched by European launch vehicle Ariane, ISRO has leased eleven 36 MHz equivalent units of C-band capacity on board to INTELSAT organisation.
